What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
