This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
