The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
