The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
