Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
